Brixham

I'm sure most visitors to my pages will be familiar with Ian Bramham's photography Ian Bramham. I've followed his emerging talent since he first bought a DSLR - not that his talent took long to emerge. I'm sure any viewers who have not seen his work will appreciate this link.

Compositionally, I think the ropes in the foreground are a real plus but that the boat aerial at the top of the frame doesn't help at all due to the way it cuts across the sky and town.

Also I like the strong whites in the foregrond boats but the contrast is too much for me in the buildings of the town - maybe the larger and more graphic shapes of the boats can take the high contrast better than the smaller more intricate ones of the townscape? - what do reckon?

@Ian Bramham: Heh, hadn't noticed the aerial until you mentioned it - its not what I'd call ideal! The light was very harsh when I was there, far too close to mid-day. I tinkered with all my Brixham shots more than most images to get something from them. I was quite happy with the background, and how the church is the only black building in contrast to the others being washed out - they are actually a nice range of colours in the flesh. But the foreground was a real struggle. I had it much darker than this for a long time, then decided to try making more of the tyre, so lifted out the foreground ripples to the right at the same time. I think the boat nearest to us works well, but the other ones aren't particularly pleasant to look at or add anything much to the pic - other than the tyre. I'd have more enthusiasm for this pic had they not been there. Its a set I may tinker with in the future, though would rather reshoot at a different time of day... with different boats. I've been wondering how I would paint this one - and I still don't know!
