Squiggle 6, Morecambe Bay

Posted by
John Leech (Grange-over-Sands, United Kingdom) on 21 February 2013 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This squiggle has developed over the last two or three weeks. Its a strange one, it doesn't really go anywhere, its not a channel out to the open sea, but a squiggle up onto a sandbank. I've watched it slowly change, my first studies of it weren't very squiggly at all. Today, the clouds went into spotlight mode, a lot of cloud cover, but breaks allowing pools of light through to the sands. A light wind keeps them moving. At 10am the sun aligns with the squiggle, so bright reflections are possible - its just a matter of waiting, waiting for the balance to light the right parts and leave the rest in comparative darkness.

A standard exposure of 8000th at f8 was far too twinkly, so I stacked 16 stops worth of ND filters on my lens, then stopped down a bit further resulting in exposures of around 40s. That proved pretty much ideal. Short enough to have some predictability, but long enough to blur the cloud motion (pools of light) and reduce the twinkles.

I don't know what the bay will conjure up to outdo this one, but I hope I'm ready when it does :~O
